Meet the one-film masterpiece

Charles Laughton directed only this one film, and it is a near-perfect Southern Gothic fable of a preacher with love and hate tattooed on his knuckles. Its stark shadows and river-lullaby imagery feel like a grim fairy tale. It belongs on any serious list of films that changed how people see. A short, potent watch.
