Altman drops a 1950s private eye into the laid-back, dishonest 70s and lets the decade defeat him. Elliott Gould's Marlowe repeats 'It's okay with me' until the phrase curdles. The film is funny, loose and finally cruel. It is about a man whose decency is a fossil in a world that has moved on.
