by Sergei Parajanov, 1969

Cinema as still life. Images to read, not follow.

Read a film like a poem

Sergei Parajanov tells the life of a poet not through plot but through tableaux, arranged objects, fabrics and fruit in deep red and gold. There is almost no dialogue, only image after image that wants to be read symbolically. If you have ever wanted cinema to behave more like a painting, this is your door. Watch a few minutes, pause, look again.
