Sit with a film that listens

by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, 2021

A three-hour film about grief, translation and the parts of us we can't voice.

8 October 2026

A man drives a red Saab through Tokyo, talking to a cassette of his dead wife. A quiet young actress sits in the back, learning his routes. Hamaguchi lets scenes run long enough that you forget you are watching and start listening. The film treats grief as something you drive through, not past. By the time it reaches Murakami's Chekhov, you have stopped waiting for it to end and started hoping it won't.
