Lucie Rie fled Vienna for London in 1938 and spent decades making pots in a small studio near Paddington. Her vessels are pared back to a glance: a subtle foot, a glaze that breaks at the rim, a bowl that holds light. She refused the era's taste for heavy, expressive ceramics. Her work argues that a pot can be modern without raising its voice.
