Saul Bass titles graphic design as overture

Saul Bass designed the opening titles for Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder and The Man with the Golden Arm, and in doing so turned a throwaway moment into a piece of art. His paper cut-outs, jagged lines and spare typography told you how to feel before the story started. He also designed some of the most recognised corporate marks of the 20th century. The lesson is the same: reduce until only the idea remains.
